The Gartner report states that: “Apple has sold 17 million iPhones, having an annual increase of 21 percent, but down nearly 3 million units compared to the second quarter of 2011, due to the announcement of the iPhone 4S in October. Gartner believes that Apple will recover in the fourth quarter, given the amount of pre-orders for the iPhone 4S in the first week after its announcement. Markets such as Brazil, Mexico, Russia and China are becoming increasingly important to Apple, which account for 16 percent of total sales, especially now that the 3GS and 4 received cuts on prices.”

In all this we see the huge step of Android who got 52.5% of the smartphone market during the quarter, from 43.4% the previous quarter.
But even if Android continues to take more than half of the smartphone market worldwide, Apple continues to increase its share of profits in the mobile phone industry, in fact, several studies show that Apple currently holds more than half of the profits in the industry.
